Getting to Yelapa
<<<<
The only airport serving the area is the one in
Puerto Vallarta. Try to catch flights that arrive by 2 or 3pm, otherwise you may
have to spend the night in PV and catch a water taxi the next day. If you have
time and don't mind an hour boat ride, catch a cab from the airport to Los
Muertos pier in Old Vallarta (also referred to as the Romantic Zone).
The cab fare should be $20-25 US. You may be able to share one with someone else
heading that way.
At the pier, folks will want to sell you a round-trip ticket. It isn't
necessary and will limit your exit options when you want to depart from
Yelapa. A one way fare should cost 110-120 pesos and you pay the attendant who
will be helping you to get off the boat. It is a good idea to line up for the
passage 10-15 minutes before departure to make sure you get on.
After stowing your bags up front, try to make your way as far to the stern or
rear of the boat as you can, as the one hour ride will be easier on your spine
if it is a choppy sea. I believe the last water taxi from Los Muertos leaves
about 5:30pm, and there are frequent departures earlier in the day, starting at 10:30am.
If you have the time, the bus only costs 5 pesos and you can also get to Los
Muertos by bus. If you get off where the bus leaves for Boca de Tomatlan, you
can buy a ticket for that bus for 55 pesos and be in Boca in about a half hour
from Old Vallarta. The water taxi ride from Boca takes about 25-30 minutes and
only costs 50-60 pesos . Get off on the road at the Boca de Tomatlan bus
stop and walk down the hill into the
village and veer to the right and find the beach where the water taxis land and
depart. You will probably get your feet wet but it is easy to board. All the
other info about round-trip tickets and sitting towards the stern still applies
.
